Welcome to the Inside Track with ARC. The Auto Research Center is a specialized research facility serving the motorsport, production, commercial and government industries. The ARC global headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana which hosts their 50% scale wind tunnel, 7-post, drivetrain test rigs and CFD cluster center. ARC offers a wide range of solution package to further speed and efficiency.

ARC's INDEPENDENT STUDY ON BACKWARDS LIFTOFF

In the wake of multiple backwards blow over incidents during the month of May, ARC did its own independent CFD study on backwards liftoff. Using the current Indycar, ARC did runs of the car going backwards at 220mph in race configuration setup both in free air and 5.5 inches from a wall.
Results from the study showed that when the car is about to hit the wall, there is a 10mph reduction in speed needed to create liftoff. This is caused by a significant acceleration of air between the wall and sidepod, rear wheel, rear wheel guard/bumper cover configuration, causing a low pressure zone.
When the car is sliding backwards both isolated and near wall, lift is being generated on the bottom of the rear wheel guards, diffuser, lower beam wing. While when the car is near to the wall, the upper rear sidepod produces a signification increase in lift. Throughout all conditions the front wing is still producing downforce.

DRIVE AIR ANALYSIS USING SCALE MODELS

With an increase in drive air testing, ARC is currently taking comments from automotive manufactures on development of drive air systems using scale models. Currently, testing is done using full scale cars, but interest has been shown to use the modularity advantage of scale models. Combined with using scale models early in the design process would allow a great range of drive air concepts to be tested and allow for more refinement during the later stage of vehicle development.
Using ARC's quick build scale model process, a new scale model can be built in less than three months. This quick build utilizes a common spine, frame and suspension mounting setup can be moved to customer specific locations in only a few mouse clicks. The customer specific body, cooling package and engine is custom fitted to create a detailed highly accurate scale model.
